Watch the recording of November’s Wildfire Recovery presentation

Published by Steve Clark on

National Park Service wildfire ecologist Dr. Marti Witter gave a fantastically interesting and informative talk, “Fire History, Climate Change, and Wildfire Recovery in the Santa Monica Mountains” on November 12th. The Zoom presentation is now available for viewing. Her talk was the finale of the Conejo Open Space Foundation speaker series for 2020. We had about 60 to 70 folks online watching her talk.

She has graciously provided her slide deck for everyone to view.

Here are some screenshots from the Zoom presentation.

Here are a few take-aways from her talk

  • Every decade, about 70% of the area of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area burns
  • Fires are increasing in frequency and intensity
  • The chaparral completely recovers unless subsequent fires are too close together
  • Global Warming is only responsible for about 50% of the change in fires

We expect more coverage of Marti’s talk in our Winter 2020 Newsletter that will be coming out in December. Watch for it!
