Watch the recording of the 101 Freeway wildlife crossing talk: its need and current status

Published by Steve Clark on

“Wow. Beth is even better than I had hoped!!!” That was one response to March 11th presentation on the need for the 101 Freeway wildlife crossing bridge. The Zoom webinar was given by Beth Pratt, the Executive Director of the National Wildlife Federation for California. 215 people registered for the event.

Beth gave an extremely engaging virtual presentation in her very enthusiastic and folksy style. Her talk on the Liberty Canyon wildlife crossing was COSF’s first Speaker Series presentation of 2021. Her Zoom presentation is now available for viewing, below.

The general perception is that the wildlife crossing is to keep mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains from going extinct because of inbreeding that leads to genetic decline. That’s a major part of it, but in reality the bridge will benefit all local wildlife, including plants and birds.

The proposed wildlife bridge spanning 10 lanes of the 101 freeway at Liberty Canyon in Agoura Hills is tantalizingly close to starting construction. The effort to build a safe connection between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills began in 2016. Now, Caltrans is completing its final design and engineering plans for the 165-foot wide, 210-foot long structure that will also span Agoura Road.

We think you will agree that the crossing is essential for all local wildlife, especially if mountain lions are to survive in the long term, and hope you will help contribute to its building by making a charitable donation to the Julia Osborn Gourley Campaign. All contributions to this memorial campaign will be directed to the Liberty Canyon wildlife crossing.

More details from Beth’s presentation will be included in our Spring Newsletter, expected to hit your email inboxes this Monday. Watch for it!
